Sacrament of Holy Matrimony

“So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

— Mark 10:8–9 (Sacred Scripture)

Significance in the Life of a Christian

Theological roots, spiritual fruits, and indelible supernatural character conferred upon the faithful.

The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament (CCC 1601).

Christian marriage is a living sign of the covenant between Christ and His Church (Ephesians 5:32). Spousal love is elevated by sacramental grace, which strengthens the spouses in fidelity, mutual self-giving, patient forgiveness, and joyful perseverance through life’s trials.

The essential properties of marriage are unity (one man and one woman) and indissolubility (until death do they part), ordered toward mutual sanctification and the generous transmission of human life in the domestic church.
