Sacrament of Holy Orders
The apostolic ministry consecrated by Christ to shepherd, teach, and sanctify the flock of God until the end of time.
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
— 2 Timothy 1:6–7 (Sacred Scripture)Significance in the Life of a Christian
Theological roots, spiritual fruits, and indelible supernatural character conferred upon the faithful.
Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to His apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry. It includes three degrees: episcopate, presbyterate, and diaconate (CCC 1536).
Through the anointing of the Holy Spirit and the laying on of the bishop’s hands, the ordained priest is configured to Christ the Priest, Teacher, and Shepherd. He receives an indelible sacramental character that empowers him to act in persona Christi Capitis (in the person of Christ the Head) at the Eucharistic sacrifice, to forgive sins in Confession, and to lead the flock to eternal pastures.
The ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood of all the faithful, building up the Church in unity, truth, and sacrificial love.
