Theology & Catechism of the Catholic Church

Significance in the Life of a Christian

Theological roots, spiritual fruits, and indelible supernatural character conferred upon the faithful.

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons and daughters of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church, and made sharers in her mission (CCC 1213).

Baptism leaves an indelible spiritual mark (character) upon the soul that can never be erased or repeated. It washes away Original Sin and all personal sins committed prior to baptism, together with all punishment for sin. It infuses into the soul sanctifying grace, the theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

For the Christian in Ntenefor and the universal Church, Baptism is not merely a social naming ceremony—it is an ontological transformation: being immersed into the death of Christ so as to rise with Him to everlasting life.
